I love the OSU world!! I have now read all of the books in the series. I read them out of the order they were written and it was no detriment to my reading enjoyment. Although the books do flow from one to the other, they are easily read as stand alones.Lana isn't the typical new recruit, she is a trained doctor and former MEASH employee. She has an unhealthy desire to graduate from the academy - what is she hiding???
Cyprus, bleeds the OSU, and is the rule following, regulation loving twin of Vin, who appears in his own book! When he and Lana accidentally meet one night their steamy encounter is interrupted. Their plans for a "do-over" are derailed when he finds out she is one of his new recruits!!
There are plots afoot and assassins hiding in the OSU! I loved the whole plot. The characters are endearing even though at times I wanted to remove the stick from Cyprus orifice on occasion!! Lana has a wide streak of stubborn which causes just the right kind of friction with Cyprus drill instructor tendencies!!
I highly recommend this series!!

Lana Comet Outer Settlement Agency Book 3 edition by Lyn Brittan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book was an ARC (advanced reading copy) courtesy of the author.
I am a fan of Ms. Brittan, I find that her books are always unique, her characters intelligent, and the story believable. I was not disappointed by this book, in fact I was very impressed considering that this is a novella. I found that the story is very full with enough details and imagery to support the sweet love story that is at the focus of this book; maybe because I watch a lot of sci-fi, it was just easy for me to imagine the actions sequences. And, I imagined Cyprus as Michael Fassbender in character as "David" in Prometheus.
"fav line- "There were layers of being screwed- and they range from "kinda" to truly." This right here fell on the far end"
Dr. Lana meets Cyprus, a surly but fun OSA officer shortly before her training, and they agree to meet later. Unfortunately, she's a new recruit under his supervision, and he is brutal to his trainees. There go those fun plans. He's mystified by Lana, as she's an older than average recruit who's an ex-Corp (Meash Corp) employee. She could be making a lot more money elsewhere. They get closer as he attempts to figure out her secrets and hijinks of several kinds ensue.
Lana and Cyprus make sparks fly. The opening scene establishes Cyprus as someone who needs an attitude adjustment. He's grumpy, prejudiced, conceited, and did I mention grumpy? He believes in tough love and says some hilariously terrible things to people because he cares about them. Lana picks up on this and calls him on his bulls***. As for Lana, she's always asking questions which get her in trouble. She covers up her fears with snark, and she doesn't lose her cool in a crisis. Lana challenges Cyprus, which is good for him, and he rewards her trust, believing in her veracity and conviction.
There's an interesting twist on racism in this book. Lana is dark-skinned, and mentions that it would have been a problem in Earth's past. Cyprus is blonde and blue-eyed, but of noticeable clone heritage. She's the person of color, but prejudices have shifted so that he is the one marginalized. He has a giant chip on his shoulder about his heritage and envies his brother, who he loves, for having it easier. His physical nature also comes with an invisible disability that he has not reconciled himself with. There's another disability issue that comes up later that's good food for thought. Props to Lyn for stirring up questions of diversity and how it relates to familial ties and dependency.
The secondary characters, Cyprus' twin brother Vin and Lana's roommate Michi, are vivid and I want to get to know them better. There are a few Interfering Brother scenes that I visualized and grinned at- Vin knows just how to troll Cyprus. Michi is loads of fun with new adult issues that relate to anyone whose family has pressured them with expectations.
There are some purple words in a sex scene that distracted me. The word 'manhood' seems at odds with the rest of the terminology used- I read it twice in one page and had fits of giggles, booting my consciousness out of the story. The description of Lana (or her hips) as 'fleshy' also sounded unappealing. Thankfully, that's not in the same scene.
I found the concept of engineered humans being without emotion quite farfetched.
The last quarter of the book unravels a bit and feels rushed, including the screwball ending. The pace picks up and left me a little punch-drunk- I had to reread it to get a better sense of it. It was worth it, though extra secrets, space pirates, hacking, mistaken identities, and assumed sexualities boil over into everyone being nonplussed. I love scenes where everyone is frustrated and confused, but your mileage may vary. If you read carefully, the end won't take you by surprise.
Lana's Comet rocks! I enjoyed it so much I bought the rest of the series. Now, don't be scared off by the word "series" because this can be read as a standalone.
I loved the characters in this story, the plot, the background characters (who should get their own story, hint, hint), and the worldbuilding.
Lana and Cyprus seem like a truly odd couple due to different upbringings, experiences and lifestyles. But they come together accidentally and spark a romance that is intense and, ultimately, hot. There's sex in the story but not a LOT of it. The plot is important and interesting.
I found every aspect of this story satisfying from the cover to the resolution.
There were a handful of typos, but nothing major. I did read the first story more than a year ago (It was awesome too.) which made Cyprus more sympathetic to me, but again, it's not mandatory to read these in order.
I highly recommend this story. It left me happy.
I can scarcely believe I haven't reviewed this one before now!
I love, Love, LOVE this book.
It was sheer fun. Sure, the heroine seemed annoying and clueless about proper protocol at times (there turned out to be good reason for that), and the biological sciences a little iffy (but, hey! who can predict what will be possible in the future?), but the story was fun, at times funny, and it was just what I needed to read when I read it. The characters were likeable (yes, even the at-times-annoying heroine) and interesting.
There wasn't a lot of substance, and it was an extremely short read, but this might be a good choice for anyone looking for a bit of light mystery and fun-infused romance masquerading as action-adventure. As I wrote above, this was exactly what I needed at the time I read it.)
(It probably helped that the author didn't try to create any hand-wavy science to explain space flight.)
