In this character driven novel, author Loretta Proctor creates beautifully flawed characters that are easily identifiable with, but that also create a steady tension from start to finish of this wonderful book. Add to that some vivid descriptions of scenery, ever-evolving characters, and a conflict-ridden story line, and you have an excellent historical novel. There is a terrific surprise ending that left me satisfied. This is a fantastic read, one I highly recommend.

Liked the characters. Story of how to cope with strife and the power of good over evil. Love of the sea and the draw to it.
I grew up living at lighthouses in Calif and enjoyed this story. It was a little slow at times but did keep my interest
All the twist and turns life can take you...This book keeps you interested until the very end..I will look for other books written by this writer...
While one could predict the "happy Hollywood ending", it was still an enjoyable read. I knew little of the isolation of being a lighthouse watcher, nor the socialization of the communities of the families. This book was fluff, but fun fluff. I recommend it for when your brain is tired from more serious reading and you just want to kick back and have some relaxing leisure time with some new friends. .
Whether the lighthouse is in the UK or the US, they are always a thing of interest to me. This story with all its plot twists and turns and various characters takes you into the lives of keepers and their families. Written as the memoir of a young orphan named Bridie, it follows her life from early childhood to that is a young mother. Her life is complicated and yet a simple, pure love emerges between two strong individuals. Wonderful character descriptions, portraits of good and evil people, are placed into well described scenes in city and ocean side. You hear and see the lighthouses, the frantic movement of London life for the have nots against the richer, greedier haves. How well it end is the question.
I wavered between 3 and 4 stars for this book, then settled for a 3 (though a 4 would not be amiss)

What I liked about the book

- The author knows her light houses. She does a great job of weaving them naturally into the story without overwhelming us with research (if you've read Arthur Hailey, where every bit of research goes into the book, you'll know exactly what I mean)

- She does a terrific job with the setting. She loves England's coast, and it shows. She makes us wish we were there.

- A review complains about the sex in the story. If you read a lot of romance, you'll realize that the descriptions in this book are neither excessive/distasteful, nor unusual for a book marketed as romance

- Another review complains that the protagonist had a miserable childhood, and that made her hate the book. Quite honestly, I've read worse. A lot worse. And the tone of the book is generally positive. BTW, for those who don't like tragedies, the blurb does hint at it.

The reason I bring the unfair reviews up is because I feel those reviews do great disservice to this book.

NOTE - I don't know the author, I don't even live in the same continent as her, so there is no bias here. I picked up the book during a free run.

What could have been different -
- Since some time is devoted to what Bridie might do in college, for her to abruptly abandon her course (can't give away more of the story) bothered me. And abandoning the flat where she was living alone and moving into a bad situation - I wish she'd not been so trusting (given her background), and fought harder to try and 'find' herself.

- Sometimes the pace tended to slow. I felt tighter editing would have helped. Having said that, it was never as bad as an Arthur Hailey book - I did not find myself skipping pages.

Overall - a good read. The book will stay with me for the gorgeous descriptions.
In Loretta Proctor's Middle Watch you will truly be drawn into the life of young Bridie O'Neil. Her personality dominates this story of beautifully drawn and very real, complex people.
Ms. Proctor gives us vibrant descriptions of the Cornish coast and towns throughout the book as well as a look into the little known culture and lifestyles of lighthouse keepers. And her descriptions of London in the late 1950s seem to actually put you there. Especially in the London chapters, the tension and sense of impending disaster are unrelenting. But you can't stop rooting for this fascinating young woman. I won't give away details of the story's ending but I can guarantee that you'll be thinking about it for days.
